In 2025, while we keep the sparkle and generosity of the season, our celebrations reflect a faster, more globalised age, shaped by technology, consumerism, and social media rather than hearthside storytelling and candlelight of 1850.
Christmas in Victorian Britain was a time of transformation, turning an old winter observance into the warm, family-centred holiday we enjoy. The Victorians popularised many traditions we still cherish - decorated trees, carol singing, and sending festive cards - thanks to innovations like the penny post and the influence of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.
Yet, unlike the commercial spectacle of modern Christmas, theirs was simpler and steeped in sentiment; gifts were modest, often handmade, and family gatherings took precedence over lavish spending.
175 years later, we have the gift of AI to feed our imagination and creativity. A close realism to enjoy. But never will it replace the power of reality.
