Lit by Lies: Film Noir

Flickering flames, dancing high on drama and mystery.
From a visual standpoint, film noir is a masterclass in shadow and suggestion.
Its signature look - deep contrasts of light and darkness, oblique camera angles, cigarette smoke curling through Venetian-blind slats - creates a world where morality itself seems obscured.
The high-contrast black‑and‑white cinematography wasn’t just a stylistic choice but a psychological one, using stark lighting to mirror fractured identities and hidden motives.
Every frame feels sculpted by tension, as if the light is interrogating the characters as much as the story does.
With thanks to Saxon Brack, superb, wondefully neatly framed tributes.
